The Kitchen is the heart of the home , so what are some of the first steps you need to take to create your dream kitchen to enjoy for years to come? Here is a 4 step designer guide to creating the perfect space.

  1. Location , Location Location -

So just as the popular real estate saying goes , the location of the kitchen is critical. If you have an older home , depending on the geographical location of your residence , the kitchen may not be designed in a primal location. If you can relocate it, do it . If you need to built out into the backyard , do it! The point is, do what ever you can to get the kitchen in the right location for you and your family and friends. Ideally the back of the house away from the view of the front door! Don’t want to have to scramble to clear the dishes in the sink just to answer the front door!! This is where a butler’s pantry and or dirty kitchen could be handy. A dirty kitchen is otherwise known as a prep kitchen. A place to prepare meals and keep all the ugly and unsightly items for a large party out of site.

  2. Bring in the light -

When a space is light and bright it is naturally more inviting and welcoming. Who wants to spend time in a dark and dingy basement- like kitchen right? This can be both figurative and literal. Light walls are fun but literal light is functional and necessary for the goal to be achieved. Task and Mood lighting in your kitchen should be considered in your design . How you will be using the kitchen can impact your needs for the lighting layout. Once the layout is correct

then you can play with dimmers and wattage etc…

  3. Organization -

One of the biggest misconceptions about a dream kitchen is the need for tons of storage. Depending on what kitchen gadgets you have more storage may or may not be necessary. Often times the organization of existing cabinets with custom inserts can make all your regular sized cabinets and drawers perform double duty quite easily. What this will do is allow you to create the kitchen you truly desire to have. In our recent remodel project. Our Client decided there was not a need to add all the upper cabinets back into the design. In removing them it opened up the kitchen and created an open environment which she now affectionately calls “the prettiest of pinterest pictures”. #KitchenGoals

  4. Step outside the box a little -

From a designer perspective, that is one of the greatest obstacles to having your dream home or dream kitchen come to life. The idea of something that is a little outside the standard can be the very best solution for your kitchen or home remodel needs. For example, the trend that we are seeing with open shelves instead of upper cabinets started from one person being willing to take a risk and re-think what a functional kitchen looks like. If you are open and willing to think outside the box , then it could lead to a beautiful discovery.

So to recap , if you select the right location, layout, lighting , and organization with a little outside the box thinking , you can definitely create a dream kitchen that is high functioning as well!
