5 Ways to Make Your Home a Refuge- IMMEDIATELY

We are certainly all realizing a few things now that we are home almost 24-7.

Quarantine has us either loving or strongly re-thinking our current environment. Now more than ever you are probably understanding the psychological aspects that your environment has on you.

A dark and gloomy space can dramatically affect your mood in a negative way, just as easily as an organized room can make you feel energized and ready to tackle many tasks. Our brains are so interesting in this way. Its where function and form unite and make us acutely aware of things our environment is doing well and not so well.

Since we are used to being home a lot , our environment is light and bright! Our house is small so the more light the better. We know first hand how this effects your mood and productivity .

Here are 5 things you can do to improve your home environment today!

1. Lighting

Add lighting to your home it makes a world of difference. If buying something is not an option. Open the drapes and let natural light in as often as possible. As simple as this seems, fresh air is the best for small spaces, confined spaces, and any space really . We were made to be outside so letting as much fresh air in as well and as often as possible, it’s always a good idea . If you have pets especially, the fresh air in the home will clear out the unpleasant smells.

2. De- Clutter and Re-arrange

We have heard from so many of you , how this gift of time is being used to clean out closets, kitchen cabinets and drawers. Doing this makes you feel energized and ready to tackle anything, think of new ideas and activities and just be active in general. Productivity, in the new normal, is essential to not going stir -crazy. Sometimes rearranging the layout is an easy way to get new life out of your room.

3. Designated Work Zones and Times

Now that many households have 2-4 extra “co-workers” it takes being a little creative with the work zones. If you live in a larger home with multiple designated work zones you are all good here, Just make sure they are neat and tidy , have sufficient light , and storage to put things away. If you don’t have this luxury it will require some more thoughts on the matter. If your dining table is your only choice. Designate a work area for each person. Have a schedule of “work hours”. After work time, it is imperative that the table be cleaned up and all computers and note pads, and books be put away. This is crucial if you have a designated work space or not. Each of us probably lives with multiple personality types : the neat freak, the messy one, the laid back one and the sensitive one, to name a few. Some will have no problem focusing with noise, and mess , while others will struggle immensely if everything isn’t just so. So be considerate of your new co-workers and act accordingly. Headphones are huge, and eating lunch in the kitchen and cleaning up the mess afterwards will go a long way to keeping the peace in these new multi purpose zones.

4. A Schedule is your Friend

For the type A in you, this is a no -brainer, but for the other personality types this may be more of a foreign concept. This is the key to making life at home more bearable for all.

The Schedule.

What does the morning look like? If you have one person eating breakfast at 7 and others eating breakfast at 11am , it is bound to upset someone who just cleaned the kitchen or just started working.

If there is an agreed upon schedule there will be less friction. Even try to schedule your fun! That will give everyone something to look forward to. Like every night is game or movie night at 7pm. This will give all an incentive to finish and and clean up on time. The order of a schedule keeps the house rolling and moving in a positive direction.

4. Treat it like a Haven

If you want your home to feel like a Haven. You have to treat it like one. Fluff the pillows, straighten the couch, put the trash in the trash can. Think Model Home. The reason model homes look so amazing is because the builder and the designer know and understand the euphoric feeling you get when everything is in its place and the environment is truly eye catching. You literally think , Wow I want to live here? You think the same thing we all think when we see a beautiful home with everything in its place. I need to live like this.
