3 Things You Must Know When Building a Custom Home
1. There Are Different Roles Associated with Building a Custom Home
There are different roles that need to come together to complete a custom home build. The Architect typically handles the exterior and the rough interior layouts, Interior design can also deal with rough interior layouts, Kitchen, bath design layout, Wall details, furniture, and accessories, and the General Contractor is responsible for building all to the exact specifications. In some instances for Architects and Interior Designers, these roles can overlap.
The overlap is usually small, for example, the Interior Designer may select the stone on the facade of the home and the Architect may have done the kitchen layout.
If both design professionals are one the job, more than likely they have worked together on any of the overlaps. The difference in the roles is so crucial to completing your home and having it be what you have been dreaming of.
Your interior designer is not just arranging space for you.
He or she is trained to make the home feel as comfortable and as beautiful as you have been dreaming. its a part of the design process and each role plays an important part in helping you reach your goals.
2. The Process is Methodical
As you have probably been experiencing working with the Architect, that the exterior and layout of your home was a methodical process that the architectural team underwent to create the ooohs and awes you felt when you looked over the plans for the first time.
The same is true for the interior design of the home.
Because of the magic of TV, we can often think that its just a few quick shopping trips and wallah! The home is complete.
The Interior design of your home when completed by the professional can be just as tedious as the exterior design and layout. In many cases more tedious because it is literally the dwelling place and every last detail needs to be just so.
If your designer is helping you coordinate all the finishes of a project, there are in many cases hundreds of details that have to all come together. Your designer is also responsible for translating the idea on paper and in a format that someone who doesn’t do design every day can appreciate it.
This can be a lengthy process, but the end results are worth it.
3. The Time it Takes to Build Varies
If you have begun on this journey you may be aware of the time it takes to build a home from the ground up and if you haven’t then you may be surprised. Depending on the size and unique situation of your custom home you may be looking at up to 2 years before you can complete this process. Patience is definitely a virtue in this regard.
And it will be required on many fronts.
As we all know, anything worth having takes time and work.
The time is actually a good thing, it allows you to discover issues, get familiar with the details and how you will be using the space. The planning aspect of the design is really the magical part that makes it so wonderful in the end.
